Manipur: The situation in Manipur, a state in India, has become very tense due to fierce clashes between tribals and non-tribals. The violence has now spread to the neighboring state of Meghalaya, where students from the Kuki and Meitei communities of Manipur studying in various colleges and universities in Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, engaged in a violent clash. The conflict between the student groups of both communities turned into a violent attack last Thursday night, and the police had to intervene and arrest 16 people from the spot.

According to the latest reports, the situation in Meghalaya has become precarious due to the widespread violence in Manipur, and the unrest has spread causing havoc and destruction. Rahul Gandhi Launches Scathing Attack on PM Modi Following Disqualification from Parliament

After being disqualified from parliament, Rahul Gandhi, the top opposition leader, launched a blistering attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Mr. Gandhi accused the Prime Minister of being afraid of his next speech and referred to Veer Savarkar when asked why he didn’t apologize for his comments in London and during the defamation trial in which he was convicted.

According to Mr. Gandhi, “I have been disqualified because the Prime Minister is scared of my next speech. I have seen fear in his eyes. That’s why they don’t want me to speak in Parliament.”

When responding to the BJP’s call for an apology, Mr. Gandhi said, “My name is not Savarkar. I am a Gandhi. I won’t apologize.” He also refuted the BJP’s allegations that he had sought the intervention of international forces in the country’s domestic affairs. He clarified that he had asked the Speaker to let him respond on the floor of the House to the accusations made against him regarding his London remarks.

Mr. Gandhi stated, “BJP leaders claimed that I am helping anti-India forces. I told the Speaker that it is my right to respond to these allegations. But he didn’t allow me. I have only one step, and that is to fight for the truth and to defend the democratic nature of this country. Disqualify me for life, jail me for life, I will continue going.”

In response, the BJP doubled down on its attack on Mr. Gandhi, claiming that the Congress was portraying him as a victim for political gain. Former Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said, “He is not the only one. 32 leaders have been disqualified across the country, including six from the BJP. The Congress is trying to project Rahul Gandhi as a victim for electoral gains in Karnataka.”

Mr. Gandhi, the face of the Congress, was convicted of defamation in Gujarat, the home state of PM Modi. As a result, he was disqualified from parliament the following day and sentenced to two years in prison. However, he has yet to appeal the verdict in a higher court.

Despite his disqualification and legal challenges, Mr. Gandhi remains undeterred. He confidently stated, “Do I look worried? I’m excited.”

The origins of the case against Mr. Gandhi can be traced back to a comment he made during a 2019 election rally in Kolar, Karnataka, where he appeared to insinuate that PM Modi is a criminal. Mr. Gandhi had stated, “How come all thieves have Modi as the common surname,” leading to several defamation cases being filed against him across various states.

The BJP interpreted Mr. Gandhi’s statement as a smear campaign against those who share the Modi surname and the OBC community.

The Congress Party has announced plans to hold a solidarity march following the sentencing of party leader Rahul Gandhi to two years imprisonment in a defamation case. Gandhi’s remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s surname made in 2019 led to his conviction by a Surat court.

However, the repercussions of the verdict extend beyond Gandhi’s personal fate. The Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency, which he represented, was declared vacant after his disqualification from Parliament. The Lok Sabha secretariat issued a notification on Friday, confirming Gandhi’s removal as a member of the Lower House of Parliament following his conviction.

The disqualification means that three seats in the Lok Sabha are now vacant: Jalandhar, Lakshadweep, and Wayanad. The Jalandhar seat became vacant after the passing of Congress member Santokh Singh Chaudhary, while the Lakshadweep seat was vacated after the disqualification of NCP member Mohammad Faizal P P due to his conviction in an attempted murder case.

Gandhi has been an active member of Parliament for nearly two decades, representing the Amethi parliamentary seat in the Lok Sabha from 2004 to 2019, before switching to Wayanad in the 2019 elections. His defeat in Amethi to BJP leader Smriti Irani was a major upset for the Congress Party, making his current predicament all the more difficult for the party.

Hyderabad: Mohammed Rizwan, a food delivery boy in Hyderabad, met with a tragic end on January 11 when he was attacked by a German Shepherd dog while delivering food to an apartment in Banjara Hills. Rizwan suffered critical injuries and passed away three days later, leaving his family in a financial crisis. The 23-year-old was the sole breadwinner of his family and had discontinued his education to take care of his ailing father. He used to earn about Rs 500 to Rs 700 a day, working from noon to night for food delivery aggregators like Swiggy and Zomato.

After the incident, the dog owner N. Shobana was booked by the police under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. As Rizwan was filling in for his elder brother on the day of the incident, his family was concerned that they would not receive any compensation from the food delivery aggregator. They opted for an out-of-court settlement with the dog owner for Rs 5 lakh, withdrawing the police case against her.

Rizwan’s family and friends remember him as a jovial boy who was passionate about cricket. His ID with Swiggy was blocked for some reasons, and he was sometimes filling in for his brother. However, since he was not a registered delivery partner with Swiggy, his family is unlikely to receive any assistance from the company. According to Shaik Salauddin, the founder-president of Telangana Gig and Platform Workers’ Union, the family deserved to be paid about Rs 22 lakh by the company as per the Workmen Compensation Act.

Salauddin has been raising his voice for the rights of delivery executives, demanding better wages and improved working conditions. He has also been calling on food aggregators to do away with the time limit for delivery, as it puts pressure on delivery boys to complete their deliveries within the deadline, leading to accidents and violations of traffic rules.
