New Delhi: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister L Murugan and Trinamool Congress Sushmita Deb have been unanimously elected to the Rajya Sabha. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has been elected to the Rajya Sabha from Assam on Monday. Sonowal was the only candidate for the seat from Assam, and on the last day of his withdrawal, the Returning Officer nominated him to the Rajya Sabha. Similarly, L Murugan has been elected to the Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh .
Former Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had filed his nomination papers for the post, which was vacated after Assam Assembly Speaker Biswajit Demari resigned from the Rajya Sabha. The Rajya Sabha seat in Madhya Pradesh was vacated in July this year due to Thawar chand Gehlot’s resignation.
Gehlot was made governor of Karnataka in July, for which he also resigned as Union minister. Murugan is from Tamil Nadu and was recently included in the cabinet by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Similarly, Manas Bhuiyan of TMC resigned as a Rajya Sabha member after winning the Assembly elections from Sabang in West Medinipur, and Sushmita has gone to the Rajya Sabha in her place.
