ROURKELA: Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) of SAIL is all set for another growth with the addition of brand-new production systems and technological measures at a cost of around Rs 5,000 crore. A public hearing on ecological impact is set up to be held by Odisha State Contamination Control Board at the Civic Centre here on September 13 where all proposed tasks would be taken up. In line with the National Steel Policy, the RSP is planning to increase the production capability of hot metal from today level of 4.5 million tonnes per year (MTPA) to 4.855 MTPA, unrefined steel from 4.2 MTPA to 4.85 MTPA, and profitable steel from 3.880 MTPA to 4.325 MTPA. Accordingly, brand-new coke ovens battery-7 with a production capacity of 0.770 MTPA will turn up near coke ovens battery-6, new steel melting shop (SMS)-3 having 1.15 MTPA capability will be set up surrounding to SMS-1 and stabilizing furnace with 0.3 MTPA capacity will be established inside the new plate mill to handle specific niche market sectors.
A brand-new oxygen plant with an ability of 1,000 tonnes each day would be set up near the existing plant to fulfill the enhanced capacity of the blast heater (BFs) and also accommodate medical oxygen requirements. Under the green effort, various production systems would be contacted the proposed gas pipeline network to suppress use of fossil fuels like coal. Besides, centers for charging of pellets, increasing hot blast temperature with setup of a new range in BF-5 and oxygen enrichment have actually similarly been prepared for capability enhancement of the existing BF. SP management sources claimed that all the proposed tasks with superior environment technologies envisage ‘absolutely no discharge’ concept and would not need drawing extra fresh water from Brahmani river. It is stated that RSP has actually produced above 92 million tonne in over 6 years and contributed more than Rs 22,000 crore to the exchequer of both the Centre and State. Throughout 2013-14, an enormous modernization and growth was performed in RSP enhancing its capacity from 2 MTPA to 4.5 MTPA at a cost of around Rs13,000 crore. A brand-new hot strip mill was commissioned in January 2020 for around Rs 3,000 crore.
