Fire Service officials inspect hotels, clubs in State ahead of New Year celebrations

Bhubaneswar:30/12/2017

Teams of personnel from the Odisha Fire Services today swung into action to prevent any mishaps during New Year celebrations in the State.

Taking a cue from the recent major fire mishap at Kamala Mills in Mumbai that killed 14 people including one from Odisha, simultaneous inspection of various hotels, clubs and other places were conducted. With people across the State all set to engage in New Year celebrations, the Fire Services officials today conducted a safety check in various hotels, clubs and other public places. The move is aimed at ensuring such public places are equipped to deal with emergency situations including fire mishaps.

The fire safety inspection was conducted at prominent hotels, clubs and cinema halls in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Puri, Rourkela, Berhampur and Sambalpur, informed DG Fire Services and Home Guards, BK Sharma. Around 20 teams under the leadership of senior fire service officials physically inspected the venues of New Year celebrations and checked the condition of equipments and other safety measures, said Sharma.

The teams basically inspected whether the concerned hotels have adequate fire extinguishers and if they are in working condition or not, entry and exit routes and other measures taken to minimize loss of life and property in case of fire mishaps. During the inspection, various inadequacies were noticed. The organizers were informed in writing to rectify the shortcomings as well as deficiencies by December 31, 2017 evening before celebrations begin. In case of non compliance, appropriate legal action under Odisha Fire Prevention and Fire Safety Rule-2017 shall be initiated, he warned. The object of inspections is to ensure safety of citizens, who shall be celebrating New Year in various hotels, clubs etc.

The inspections are also intended to sensitize the organizers about their responsibilities to ensure fire safety and to remain completely prepared to avoid any fire mishap, said Sharma.
