Three more farmers commit suicide over crop loss, debt

 Even as the State Revenue Minister directed officials to expedite disbursement of relief for pest attack, drought and unseasonal rains, three more farmers, including a woman, from Jajpur and Bargarh and Ganjam districts allegedly committed suicide in the past 2 days due to crop loss and debt burden.

According to officials reports A woman sharecropper Buluma of Purushottampur Ganjam district died in Hospital where she was being treated after consuming pesticides two days ago.

one Suresh Sahu of Sundarpur village under Bari block in Jajpur district hung himself from a tree close to his village over alleged crop failure and debt burden late Monday while a farmer of Raisilpadar under Gaisilat block in Bargarh district Umakant Sahoo allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison over crop loss today. 

The family of Suresh alleged that Sahu had taken loans from money lenders for agriculture.

He had cultivated paddy  on his  three   acres of land after obtaining loan of  Rs 1lakh    from  the village Primary Agricultural  Cooperative Society to purchase paddy seeds and fertilizers.  But, the unseasonal rain damaged all the paddy crops, the family members said.

Around 500  BJP supporters blocked the main road at Sundanpur to protest the incident and demanded compensation of Rs 10 lakh  for the deceased ‘s  family.
