Congress observes ‘Black Day’ to protest demonetisation

The State unit of Congress today staged a demonstration in front of the regional office of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) as it observed ‘Black Day’ one year after the old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes were demonetized by the NDA government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Centre.

Speaking to media persons, OPCC president Prasad Harichandan said, “One year has passed since demonetisation was announced. The nation is still suffering its consequences. The common people and the poor are suffering. Prime Minister Narendra Modi provided concessions of lakhs of crores who had black money, but did nothing for the poor”.  Harichandan said economy has derailed post the move. “People have lost their jobs and scores lost their lives by standing in front of banks and ATMs post demonetisation”, he stated.

"Narendra Modi had said that fake notes will vanish from the market, black money will be spotted, corruption will be curbed and terrorism will be minimised, but nothing has changed in the part one year. The decision of demonetisation has proved to be a disaster for the nation”, rued the OPCC chief.

BJD spokesperson Debashis Samantray said, “We had supported demonetisation when Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that black money will return, corruption will stop and terrorism will be curbed. But it is clear that the move did not serve its desired purpose. The national statistics state that the nation has faced losses by demonetisation. The middle class, lower middle class and the poor have been most affected by demonetisation.”

Meanwhile, Odisha BJP president Basant Panda said, “Those who are celebrating black day, first should assess their 70 years of politics in front of a mirror. After the assessment, it will become clear who is responsible for hoarding black money. Prime Minister Modi is presenting an example of success through different schemes every 10 days”.
