Odisha to have Organic Farming Policy in two months

 Odisha government today decided to prepare an Organic Farming Policy within two months to provide support for growth of organic sector and marketing of organic products.

The decision in this regard was taken the Agriculture Cabinet meeting chaired by chief minister Naveen Patnaik here.

"To enable the farmers to get higher return for their produce, the proposed policy will help to achieve the goal," a senior official said after the agriculture cabinet meeting.

The meeting discussed on the fact that some areas in the state have a very low or negligible consumption of chemical fertiliser and by default follow organic farming.

The 4th advance estimate for 2016-17 show that there has been all time record production of 98.74 lakh metric ton rice in the state. From a rice importing state, Odisha is now the third largest contributor to the public distribution system, said agriculture minister Damodar Rout while highlighting the state's policies behind rise in the production of paddy in Odisha.

"It is therefore necessary to further the growth of agricultural production as majority of people depend on the agriculture," Rout said adding that allied sectors like fisheries, poultry, goatery have significantly contributed to the rise in income of farmers in the state.

The meeting also resolved that the farmers affected by the recent spells of flood would be provided with required inputs like seeds and fertlizer. About 39,000 hectare of agricultural land has been submerged in flood water in the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur and Kendrapara. The official will access situation and provide assistance to the farmers as soon as the water receded from the field, Rout said.

Patnaik has also issued direction to the energy department to ensure that the left irrigation and other mode of irrigation facilities get power supply.
