Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today said the State Government assigns top priority for promotion of sports activities and development of sports infrastructure in the State.
Apart from taking a number of initiatives in furtherance of excellence in sports, many ambitious plans are on the anvil for nurturing young talents in different sports disciplines by way of establishing sports academies, and expanding sports infrastructure facilities, he said inaugurating the 37th Sub-Junior National Archery Championship at Kalinga Stadium here.
“We have established sports hostels in Archery at Keonjhar and Phulbani. The New Sports Hostel which is going to open at l\/lalkangiri from 15' of April this year will also have archery discipline,” the Chief Minister added.
Besides these facilities, eight nodal centers for Archery have been opened in KBK districts by SC & ST Department for coaching and training of archers, Patnaik said adding, “It is pertinent to mention that most of the top archers have come from tribal community.”
The Chief Minister said considering the potential of archery in Odisha, the State Govemment has accorded ‘Priority Discipline Status’ to it, and has accordingly upgraded it from Category-B to Category-A.
It is a pride for the State that the Archers of Odisha are consistently displaying excellent performance at various national and international events, he said and added, Odisha has produced international archers like, Rajesh Hansdak, Rajendra Guin,Sourav Dutta and Ranjit Nayak .
The State Government has also provided support for successful organization of this mega event in Bhubaneswar, he said while hoping the participants will play with a sporting sprit and achieve success in their respective event.
