RSP records highest ever hot metal prodn on single day with two blast furnaces

Blast Furnace - 4 and 5 of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) produced 11,243 Tonne of Hot Metal on December 12 thereby registering the highest ever production for a single day with two blast furnace operations.

The previous record in this regard was of 11,087 Tonne made on April 2. This achievement has been made possible because of a number of interventions made both in terms of process improvement as well as quality management at various stages under the guidance of Ashwini Kumar, CEO, RSP. The input for Blast Furnace comes from three units, namely, raw material from the Ore Bedding and Blending Plant, coke from Coke Ovens and sinter from Sinter Plants. Measures have been taken in all the three units so as to improve the quality, quantity and consistency of the input material, which resulted in all round improvement in the output from the Blast Furnaces.

Kumar, who regularly interacted with the employees of all these units ensured that every bottleneck is removed and processes streamlined. In the Ore Bedding and Blending Plant, the process of base mix preparation was modified. Increasing the number of layers and hastening the conveyor belt speed in the base mix bed, resulted in a more homogenised mix. This led to improved consistency in the quality of input material to Sinter Plants and hence to Blast Furnaces. In the Coke Ovens optimisation in the coal blend in the Batteries led to production of quality coke at a lower cost.

In the Sinter Plants- 2 and 3, other than improved base mix quality increase in the suction pressure in the sinter machines, operational consistency, debottlenecking of facilities and logistics with adequate follow up measures have sharply increased the quality as well as the volume of sinter production. No wonder the Sinter Plant-3 has surpassed its daily production record 4 times in matter of 20 days. The   latest record of 11,854 tonne was set on December 12.

The enthusiastic collective is now all set to create fresh benchmarks. In the Blast Furnaces, an initiative of using   sinter  in  small sizes  has been introduced.
