BJD, Cong rue Nabarangpur’s exclusion from Centre’s New India Mission 2022

The ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Congress have demanded inclusion of Nabarangpur in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s flagship programme ‘New India Mission-2022’.

The Centre has short-listed eight backward districts of Odisha under New India Mission 2022, meant for the development of the backward districts of the nation where as a zero district like Nabarangpur has been excluded from the list of this mission. While the per capita income of the district is the lowest in the State and literacy rate abysmal. Similarly in the field of irrigation, nutrition and health care this district’s number is ranked 30th in the State. Women’s literacy of the district is 4 percent, the lowest in Asia. More than 56 percent of women of this district are daily wage earners due to which they fall victim to malnutrition and other epidemic.

The Congress slammed the Central government asking the Prime Minister what he has done for Odisha during almost three years in power.  Former MP, Pradeep Majhi, stated that during the UPA government at the Centre Nabarangpur district was included in long term action plan including (LTAP) Backward Regions Grant Fund (BRGF), Integrated Action Plan (IAP)s and KBK plan. “However Modi government has pruned previous eight Central schemes. Besides, the exclusion of the zero district in the New India Mission 2022 proves the anti-poor and anti-backward attitude of the present government at the Centre”, Majhi alleged District Congress president Muna Tripathy, said congress will draw the attention of the President of India towards the issue and discuss with party delegates regarding further course of action.

On the other hand, BJD’s district president Prahalad Tripathy, criticized the Centre's complete neglect of the tribal dominated and Maoist affected district. “Only eight districts of Odisha have been covered under New India Mission, while the most backward region under KBK Nabarangpur, has not found a place in the list. What is the Centre’s motive for not including this district?” Tripathy questioned. He said if the Centre does not include the district in the mission 2022, then BJD will organise protest rallies from villages to towns.
