BJD, Cong demand Khattar's resignation over Dera issue

Ruling BJD and opposition Congress in State today demanded resignation of Haryana Chief Minister M L Khattar, charging him with being responsible for the violence that erupted following the rape conviction of self-styled godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh yesterday.

"Haryana Chief Minister Mr Khattar is fully responsible for the violence and must step down," BJD spokesman P K Deb said.
"The chief minister of Haryana should take moral responsibility and step down in view of the killing of 30 people in the violence," said Deb, also an MP.
Congress leader Jaydeb Jena too demanded Khattar’s resignation.
However, State General Secretary of BJP Prithviraj Harichandan, however, said, "The Dera violence should not be politicised."
Meanwhile, BJD president and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said he was pained by the loss of lives in the violence of Haryana and appealed for peace.
"Pained by loss of lives in violence in #Haryana. I condemn the unlawful acts in strongest possible terms and appeal for restoration of peace," Patnaik tweeted.
Meanwhile, security was tightened near a Dera Sacha Sauda Ashram in Puri after locals protested violence over the conviction of the sect chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh by a court in a rape case, police said today.
Condemning violence perpetrated by Dera followers in several places, the protesters staged a demonstration shouting slogans outside the ashram located on Puri-Konark marine drive last evening.
After a large number of people gathered outside the ashram, where some sect members and followers are stated to be residing, armed police personnel in strength were deployed in the area to prevent any flare up, Puri Superintendent of police Sarthak Sarangi said.
"Security has been strengthened around the ashram in order to ward off any trouble and law and order problem in the area. Prompt steps have been taken to keep the situation under control," he said.
Stating that a close watch was maintained in the area, the SP said anyone attempting to create disturbances and trouble would be handled with firm hand.
As a precautionary measure, additional security arrangements are also being made in some sensitive localities of the seaside pilgrim town and no form of disturbance would be tolerated, he said.
Personnel from the intelligence wing and police in plain clothes have also been deployed in different areas in and around the town, police said.

From asking his party men to ‘live a simple life and serve the people’ to taunting the BJP for its ‘crocodile tears’, Chief Minister and BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik has not only become politically invincible, he seems to be so in the coming years too.
