Centre extends date for groundnut procurement under PSS

The Centre has extended the date for procurement of groundnut crop in State under the Price Support System during Rabi season till 31st August.

This was informed to Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan by Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh in response to Pradhan’s letter in this regard.

“The Ministry has approved the procurement of 33/139 quintals of groundnut in the State of Odisha under the PSS for rabi 2016-17 season upto 31 August 2017,” a letter from the Agriculture Ministry said.

Notably, Pradhan had forwarded a petition from Congress leader Lalitendu Bidyadhar Mohapatra of Krishna Prasad Block in Puri district over distress sale of groundnut pods in Odisha for the Rabi Crop Season 2016-17.

The petition said that a sudden fall in prices and absence of procurement by Government at minimum support price (MSP) has led to severe crisis among farming community though Odisha had a bumper crop.

At present there is at least 34 000 quintals of groundnut pods lying unsold with the farmers in several districts including Cuttack, Mayurbhanj, Puri and Jajpur districts, Mohapatra had informed.

He urged the Ministry to extend the procurement duration considering the huge quantities of groundnuts lying with the farmers.

Notably, as per the Union Government’s notification, procurement of groundnut pods at MSP is made between March and June.
