BJD wins Deogarh municipality by-poll

Inflicting yet another body blow to the saffron party which was cock-a-hoop after winning 297 seats in last Panchayat election, the ruling BJD today won by-polls for two wards in Deogarh municipality. What is all the more significant about this win is the fact that the sitting BJP MLA Nitesh Gangadev belongs to one of these two wards where BJP has lost to BJD candidates.

BJD candidate Ahinsa Nayak defeated his nearest rival Roshan Behera of BJP by 71 votes from Gangadev’s ward. While Nayak got 523 votes, Behera got 452. Similarly, BJD candidate for ward no 9 Kula Chandrama Hasti defeated BJP’s Rajkumar Munda by 197 votes.

This defeat following the one in BJP president Basant Panda’s district, Nuapada, in recent past proves that the ruling BJD has taken the BJP’s surge in last Panchayat election quite seriously and seems to be not in any mood to yield any political space to the saffron party in the State.

Sources in knowledge of the development said BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik had entrusted the responsibility of this election to few of his trusted lieutenants to ensure defeat of BJP MLA’s nominee in his own ward.

Précis 2017
From asking his party men to ‘live a simple life and serve the people’ to taunting the BJP for its ‘crocodile tears’, Chief Minister and BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik has not only become politically invincible, he seems to be so in the coming years too.
