Public hearing on Daruthenga dumping yard issue begins

The Khurda district administration today started a public hearing of seven panchayats today for setting up a dumping yard at Daruthenga panchayat on the outskirts of the State capital. The public hearing started at the Chandaka Inspection Bungalow of Works Department.

Local residents have been protesting against the dumping yard at Bhuasuni under Daruthenga panchayat and have resorted to agitation on several occasions demanding relocation of the dumping yard. After stiff resistance from the locals, the State government decided to relocate the dumping yard at Daruthenga village to Tulsadeipur. However, it made clear that the Waste to Energy Treatment Plant will be set up at Bhuasuni under Daruthenga panchayat. Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi had scheduled the public hearing to this day to decide on the same.

On the other hand, locals have stuck to their demand for shifting of both the dumping yard and the waste treatment plant. They have been opposing the dumping of garbage there as it is polluting the air and the underground water sources. The villagers have alleged that the foul smell emanating from the garbage has made their lives miserable.

From asking his party men to ‘live a simple life and serve the people’ to taunting the BJP for its ‘crocodile tears’, Chief Minister and BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik has not only become politically invincible, he seems to be so in the coming years too.
