BMC comes up with mechanism for water segregation at source in State capital




 The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has prepared a sustainable mechanism to work out waste segregation at source in the capital city.

For better management of the solid waste in the city BMC will start collecting of garbage if it is segregated at source from July 1.   A consultation workshop will be organised among all the sanitation agencies, Sanitary Inspectors, BMC officials and some community members will attend the meeting. Besides, BMC has chalked out a rigorous communication plan for creating awareness among citizens through mass media and community level meetings. All the platform of mass media including TV, Print, FM Radio and Social Media will be used for creating awareness on waste segregation.

On the other hand the civic body has also decided to take enforcement gate way to check the violation of waste segregation. In the coming future BMC will take action against individuals who are not implementing waste segregation method by denying taking of garbage while door to door collection. In the first phase of implementation BMC’s SBA Cell would approach the members of Resident Welfare Association considering they are one of the organised colonies.

BMC will also review the status of action taken on its previous notice issued to various Apartments, Restaurants, Hotels and hostels which are considered as bulk waste generators. These sectors should go for onsite composting and follow the waste segregation norms. However BMC has decided to provide a list of empanelled agencies who are working in the field of onsite composting.

For community level awareness Community Organisers, Support organisations like NGOs and BMC officials will take number of meetings. It is also decided to take help of celebrities to approach the community for segregation of waste at source.  The carts being used for door to door collection will be re-designed to collect household garbage.
