Odisha produces more than 17 lakh cross-bred progenies of cattle, buffalo in three years

 Agriculture and Animal Resource Development Minister Damodar Rout today said as many as 17.4 lakh cross-bred progenies of cattle and buffalo have taken birth in the State during the last three years.

Highlighting the achievements of the Animal Resource Development department during the last three years, Rout said genetic up-gradation of cattle and buffalo through Artificial Insemination (AI) during 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 was 15.18 lakh, 16.34 lakh and 15.44 lakh respectively. He said for the first time in the State, sex sorted semen has been introduced and 3,138 sex sorted semen straws were used for Artificial Insemination of elite cows during the year 2016-17 to get more female calves. This has been taken up in 5 blocks (Mahanga, Nischhantakoili, Niali, Kantapada and Salipur) of Cuttack District.

He added that livestock and poultry birds of the State have been vaccinated to prevent various contagious diseases of domestic animals and birds prevalent in Odisha.  “During the year 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17; 243.13 lakh, 294.13 lakh and 364.63 lakh doses of vaccine have been utilised respectively”, Rout said. Besides, during the year 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17; 14.90 lakh, 24.54 lakh and 26.04 lakh domestic animals were dewormed, respectively.

The minister said Mobile Veterinary Unit (MVU) in the State was operational in 197 blocks during 2013-14, which have been extended to all 314 blocks of the State from the year 2014-15 onwards.  “During 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17, 3,185, 3,190 and 5,810 infertility treatment camps for cattle and buffalo have been organized respectively”, he informed. Rout added that during last three years, 9,814 small-scale dairy units were established under State Plan Scheme ‘Promotion of Dairy Entrepreneurship’ and Central Scheme ‘Dairy Entrepreneurship Development Scheme’, where farmers were provided with 25 pc to 33.33 pc subsidy on capital investment.

“In order to improve veterinary service delivery mechanism and to make it more vibrant, 376 base level posts have been created in Odisha Veterinary Service (OVS) Cadre, which was having 549 sanctioned posts earlier”, he stated.   The minister said during 2015-16 and 2016-17, 519 Livestock Inspectors were selected and are undergoing two years training at different departmental training centres. “The monthly stipend of the LIs during the training period has been enhanced from Rs 750 per month to Rs 7,200 per month”, he added.

Rout said a Bio-Safety Level (BSL) - II Lab at Animal Disease Research Institute (ADRI), Phulnakhara was commissioned during 2014-15. “Currently, preliminary screening of Avian Influenza is possible in our State at this laboratory”, he added.

The minister said during the year 2014-15, only eight poultry hatcheries were functional in the State. During the year 2015-16 and 2016-17, 30 and 55 poultry hatcheries were functional. During last three years, 23.90 lakh quality day old chicks have been produced and supplied to 59,564 farmers at an affordable cost. Under national Livestock Mission, 12,076 BPL beneficiaries have been assisted for setting up of backyard poultry unit, he informed. 

Rout said a commercial layer unit with bird capacity of 40,000 was established during the year 2015-16 and 10 poultry layer farm with bird capacity of 7.50 lakh were established in the year 2016-17 under Commercial Agri-Entrepreneurship (CAE) with release of subsidy amounting to Rs. 492.00 lakhs through APICOL.  “The egg production in the State in the year 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 was 1924, 1927.30 and 1974 million respectively”, he stated.

The minister said poultry meat production in the State during the year 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 was 73.8, 75 and 82 Thousand Metric Ton (TMT) respectively while animal meat production during the year 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 was 88.71, 92 and 94 Thousand Metric Ton (TMT) respectively.
