State Govt initiates steps to prepare sportspersons for next three Olympics

Notwithstanding the poor performance of sportspersons from State in the RIO Olympics, Odisha Government has initiated action to actively coordinate with the Union Government to formulate a Comprehensive Development Programme to prepare sportspersons for the next three Olympic Games - 2020, 2024 and 2028.

According to sources, Secretary Sports and Youth Affairs Vishal Dev is in regular contact with his Union government counterpart Injeti Srinivas in this regard.

Srinivas, the sources added, is keen on supporting the State to promote sportspersons from State for International events.

State government on its part is taking due interest to promote sportsperson in a bid to complement the efforts of the Olympic Task Force (OTF) which is preparing a comprehensive plan for next three Olympic Games, they added.

Dev is also making the arrangements for the proposed meet of the eight member OTF team which is slated to visit State soon for consultations with the stake holders.

Notably, two sprinters and four hockey players participated in the Rio Olympics and the State Government had announced to pay Rs10 lakh to each sportspersons to boost their moral.

Secretary Sports & Youth Affairs Dev is the nodal officer for such an initiative and he is coordinating the entire activities to help the OTF in formulating short, medium and long term plans for effective participation of the sportspersons across the country.

In the meantime, Srinivas has urged the State Government to involve elite sportspersons, sports bodies, educational institutions, elite coaches, sports colleges, Sports Officers at the State and District levels, Principals of the Physical Education Colleges, Sports Schools, Secretary Education, Director Sports and other officials for consultations, said sources.

Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi is taking lot of interest in promoting sportspersons for the next Olympics and accordingly directed the Department of sports and Youth Affairs to prepare a base paper for such deliberations, said the sources.

The Task Force will be submitting the comprehensive plan after conducting the national dialogue with all the stakeholders.

While the State is lacking basic infrastructure for the sportspersons to compete in an international event, creating and upgrading the infrastructure and providing proper training to the sportspersons is the focus, said a senior officer in Directorate of Sports.

In order to participate in Olympics, international exposure and training in the foreign countries is necessary to build up confidence and an arrangement is needed to be worked out with the support of the Union Government, officials feel.

They insisted that an effective talent identification process is needed for 2024 and 2028 and the OTF prescriptions will be the guiding factor for promoting sportspersons in State.
